Terms of use
Last updated: 21 October 2026.
These terms cover your use of maintainers.dev, run by The Poetry Company Limited ("we", "us"). By signing in, you agree to them. Our privacy policy explains how we handle your data.
Who can use it
- maintainers.dev is in development. You join the waitlist by signing in. We admit people from the waitlist by adding them to an allowlist, one person at a time, in our own judgement. Being in an organisation that uses the app doesn't admit you. We may also admit you through an invite from someone already admitted.
- You need an account on GitHub, Codeberg, GitLab or the atmosphere (such as Bluesky), and you must follow that service's own terms.
- You must be at least 13, and old enough to hold an account on the forge you sign in with.
- Your account is for you. Don't share it or sign in as someone else.
Acting on forges in your name
When you connect a forge, you let us use your access to read what you can see and to act as you. We only post, label, merge, close, review, react, ban, invite or change settings on a forge when you choose to: one item at a time, or as a batch you've reviewed. Some batch actions give you a few seconds to undo before they're sent.
Two things sync without a click, because they're private to you: the read and done state of your GitHub notifications (including notifications the app resolves because a later maintainer action already handled them, which you can turn off), and your GitHub watch settings if you turn on watch sync.
What you do on a forge through maintainers.dev is your action, under your name and the forge's terms. You're responsible for it, as if you had done it on the forge directly.
Acceptable use
Use maintainers.dev as a person working through your own projects. In particular:
- Don't automate it. No scripts, bots or tools that drive the app or its API, and no using it to act on forges faster or at a larger scale than you would by hand.
- Follow each forge's terms, rules on automation and rate limits, and its community guidelines. Don't use the app to spam, harass, impersonate, or ban people in bad faith.
- Don't try to reach data you aren't allowed to see, get around sign-in or the allowlist, or interfere with the service, its providers, or the forges.
- Don't put an unreasonable load on the service or the forges, for example by following far more repos than you work on.
We may limit or stop your access if you break these rules (see Ending your access).
AI suggestions
The app uses AI models to read public text and suggest things, such as what needs a reply, which labels fit, or which issues look like duplicates. These are only ever suggestions. They can be wrong. Nothing is done on a forge because of AI output unless you choose it, and you should check a suggestion before you act on it.
Your content and other people's
You keep all rights in what you write. You let us store, copy, process and display it only to run maintainers.dev for you, including sending it to the forge when you ask.
Issues, comments and other forge content belong to the people who wrote them and are governed by the forge's terms and the project's licence. maintainers.dev shows you public content; it doesn't give you any extra rights in it.
Availability and no warranty
maintainers.dev is under active development. Features will change, appear and disappear. It may be slow, wrong, unavailable, or lose data, including the copy on your device. We may change or stop the service at any time. Your forge is the source of truth: if the app and the forge disagree, trust the forge.
The service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows.
Liability
To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for:
- anything done on a forge that you chose to do through the app;
- loss of data, profits, revenue, goodwill or opportunity;
- indirect or consequential loss;
- outages, delays or errors in the service, the forges, or our providers.
Our total liability to you for anything to do with maintainers.dev is limited to £100.
Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law doesn't allow us to limit. If you use the app as a consumer, you keep your statutory rights.
Ending your access
You can stop using maintainers.dev at any time: delete your account in Settings › Account (or on the waitlist page while you wait), which revokes our access on the forges you linked where they let us and deletes your data (the privacy policy explains what stays).
We may suspend or end your access, or remove you from the allowlist, if you break these terms, if your use puts the service, its users or the forges at risk, or if we stop running the service. Where we reasonably can, we'll tell you first. When your access ends, we delete your data as the privacy policy describes.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the app develops. We'll change the date at the top and, for significant changes, tell you in the app or by email before they take effect. If you keep using maintainers.dev after that, you accept the new terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and its courts have jurisdiction. If you're a consumer living elsewhere in the UK, you may also bring a claim in your local courts.
